Write about what you remember or have been told about the day you were born

The day I was born was very different from most people. My mom woke up and went to work, because she was only 7 months pregnant. Then suddenly, her water broke and she had to be rushed to the hospital from Oak Grove Elementary. Me and my brother are twins, and so we were expected to be born early, but not 2 months. She was rushed into an emergency c-section and me and my brother were born. I was 4 pounds one ounce and he was only 4 pounds. I didn't cry when I was born, and both of us had a wide range of medical needs. We were fully reliant on medial technology to be able to breath, get nutrients, and our hearts would continuously stop beating. This led to a day full of fear and I think it relates more to infant sorrow. We lived in the NICU at choa for a month before going home. It was a very scary day for sure.  Today in class we read and analyzed 2 pairs of opposing poems and wrote a one-pager on them. I chose the contrasting poems infant joy and infant sorrow. Today has been a gr...

What do you believe is the most beautiful creation in the world—natural or man-made—and why?

I believe the most beautiful creation in the world is waterfalls. There's something so magical about the cascading water and the way it falls on the rocks below. They truly show me the scale of the Earth, and how small I am in comparison to everything. I can't see them and not thank God for everything he does. Today in class we read the poem Tyger and answered questions about it. I really enjoyed this poem, especially in regards to Earth Day. I am going to the aquarium with my friends for a yoga class today and I am very excited.

What holiday do you look forward to the most each year, and why is it your favorite?

My favorite holiday is Christmas. I look forward to many aspects of it, and the time around of it. I love the candlelight Christmas Eve service at my church, especially because I have been able to be a part of the service for the past 7 years. In our family, we have Christmas day with about 25 family members, which is a lot of people, but it is fun for a little while. I love the combination of religion and family this holiday encompasses.  Today we took a common assessment for multicultural Lit. I felt very confident on it and I am hopeful it helps me get above an 85.

What steps can you take now to prepare for a career that pays more than minimum wage?

I am currently seeking a very high paying career of a pediatrician. Next year I will begin my medical education at the University of Georgia on the premed track. I am also currently working with Emory University staff to begin a publication on FMB MDROs, which I am very excited to do, because it is nearly impossible to be published this young. Today in class we learned what life is like for people earning minimum wage, and how it is not a livable wage. I am going to work hard to insure I can have a job that will allow me to have many opportunities, both financially and expirintually.

Write about what you did over the Spring Break.

This spring break was a lot of fun for me! I started off and went to Disney World, then I went to Charleston. At Disney, I went to the Epcot theme park, and I ate a lot of food. I went to the water parks for the first time which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, I was sick in Charleston, but it was still nice to have a change of scenery.  Today in class we researched possible careers and the financial impacts of them. I want to be a pediatrician, so I will be in school for a very very long time.

Write about a time when you realized that your perception of a person or group was based on stereotypes. How did this realization affect your behavior or beliefs? What steps did you take to change your perceptions?

Honestly, I realized this in class on Tuesday when I was reading the article. I know this is not right or good, but I had always been taught to believe that Africa is a very poor continent, and that everyone is struggling for basic supplies. Books like A Long Walk to Water and Things Fall Apart instigated this stereotype. In addition, this is the common theme represented in television, movies, and media. After reading the article, I am working hard to reeducate myself to have a more accurate world view.  Today in class people began a presentation. I was not in class this day, due to the fact that I was on a field trip, but I have started the assignment and I am going to finish it tonight.

Write a blog post reflecting on a time when you or someone you know was misunderstood because of a single story. How can limiting ourselves to one perspective be harmful? What can we do to make sure we see people and cultures more fully?

I know someone who is Asian, and people often assume that her family is like Crazy Rich Asians. This is negative, because it assumes that everyone is over the top and very wealthy. This comedic view on the culture is not what it is actually like, and when people believe it, they lose out on large amounts of the culture. In addition, there are many different cultures in Asia, and this movie makes it seem like everyone is the same.  Today we completed a Common Lit on the dangers of a single story. I had never thought about the impact that this has, so I am very interested to learn more.
